About the Barbarians

The Bavarian Barbarians is a not-for-profit, volunteer-run women's amateur sports organization. It was founded in 2011 by a handful of women who had the desire to learn and play roller derby. More than just derby girls, and far from the staged acts of the 1970s, this team is an awesome group of women who are dedicated to developing and promoting this exciting sport, supporting local businesses, and giving back to the community that supports us. Our skaters are moms, wives, students, business professionals, and community volunteers.

Our season typically kicks off each December with the recruitment and training of new skaters and ends August with a home bout as our season finale. Our training consists of two evening practices per week throughout these months. Practices are led by our coach and captain and focus on skill development, safe implementation, strength and endurance training, and strategy.

Association Goals:

  •  to promote flat track roller derby
  •  to provide a safe environment for contact sport
  •  to promote an active lifestyle for generations of women
  •  to encourage alternative sporting options for women
  •  to develop a junior team, encouraging young women to be healthy and active
  •  to host our own roller derby boot camps in the East Kootenay
  •  to be a presence in the community, volunteering at numerous events
  •  to make a positive contribution to the community of Kimberley
